Automatic Equipment for non Destructive Test of Surface Defects and Dimensional Check

N. D. Test and Dimensional Measurement of Cylinder Bores

Automatic Equipment for non Destructive Test of Surface Defects and Dimensional CheckThe manufacturing process of cylinder bores of automobile engines can often cause the formation of porosity (resulting from fusion in aluminium or cast iron cylinder bores) or cracks in steel cylinder liners. The need of both a Non-Destructive inspection to detect superficial defects as well as the typical dimensional controls has driven the integration of Eddy Current and pneumatic technology in a single plug.

ND Camshaft Inspection

Manual Gauging Station for Multidimensional Inspection of Conrods

A) Problem Description

Camshafts for automobile engines are manufactured using a variety of methods.They can cause a variety of quality defects, such as:

* porosity

* hardness cracks

* casting shrinkage, cavities and holes

* missing material

Subsequent grinding can also cause cracks or grinding burns (soft spots). They are caused by variations during grinding operations such as changes in grinding speed, changes in grinding wheel/workpiece position and by the effects of the coolant used.

In the past, attempts to automate test procedures have often failed.

B) Solution

Complex geometry’s such as camlobes can now be easily tested with standard Marposs N.D. probes. The Marposs N.D. inspection method is based on the Eddy Current technology. It is the only method capable of performing N.D. inspections automatically. For this reason, it can be easily installed into a production line for 100% inspection.

The traditional testing procedure, which is usually performed with magnetic powder and/or human evaluation, can be now reduced in terms of inspection time and overall cost.

Cracks as small as 100 microns in depth can be detected, dependent upon the surface finishing and material homogeneity

M63 Measuring System

Manual gauging station for inspection of ring-like components (bushings)

Manual gauging station for inspection of ring-like components (bushings)The M63 bench is an innovative measuring system with the following strengths: simple and efficient in design, compact and robust.

The bench gauge is dedicated to the final or interoperational inspection of a single bushing type part (vertical axis, radial symmetry and weighing less than 15 Kg/33 lb).

The part is manually loaded and referred on a nosepiece or a descending pivoting arm.

The most recent Marposs measuring transmissions belonging to the AMA line are utilized in the gauge design (made with non-magnetic stainless steel) and with Red Crown pencil probes. These measuring components are mounted to a counterplate fixed to the part support plate by three columns.

This mechanical solution completely isolates the measuring structure from the weight of the part, assuring the highest metrological performances.

If required by the application, the measuring transmissions can be provided with pneumatic retraction. The actuation of the rear measuring group can be manual or pneumatic.

The new M63 bench replaces the Marposs Universal Quick Set bench when no retooling is needed and is provided with guarding for the rear measuring group.

The gauge system can be provided with either static or dynamic capabilities for dimensional and geometric inspection of I.D.’s and/or O.D.’s.

Vertical Station for Manual Inspection of Shafts - M67

Vertical Station for Manual Inspection of Shafts - M67The M67 bench is an innovative measuring system with the following strengths: simplicity and efficient in design, compact and robust.

Its bracketry and guarding are manufactured using Laser Cutting technology which can be easily integrated with CAD systems. This reduces both preparation times and costs for manufacturing of individual details.

The bench is dedicated to the final or interoperational inspection of a single part type weighing less than 6 Kg.

The measuring components are realized with the most recent Marposs measuring transmissions belonging to the AMA line (made in non-magnetic stainless steel) and with Red Crown pencil probes.

The workpiece is manually loaded in the vertical position and referred between centers that are either fixed or motorized.

Vertical Bench for Shaft Inspection M57V

Vertical Bench for Shaft Inspection M57V The M57V bench is an innovative measuring system which offers simplicity through the efficiency of its design, as well as being compact and robust.

The vertical solution provides a much smaller foot print which takes up a limited amount of surface space as compared to the horizontal solution. In addition, vertical loading of the part eliminates part and structural deformation, as well as any bending in the reference centers and helps part dragging in dynamic applications.

The bench, engineered for crankshafts weighing more than 6 Kg, can also check camshafts, gear shafts, rotors and axle shafts.

The measuring components are comprised of the Marposs measuring transmission devices belonging to the AMA line (made of non-magnetic stainless steel) and Red Crown pencil probes. Other cell types can be used in special applications. The bench gauge is dedicated to the inter-operational inspection of a single part type after end face milling, turning, pin bearing milling and grinding. The work piece is loaded manually or by a manual gantry between centers in the vertical position. The centers are either fixed (static measurement) or motorized (dynamic measurement) and the measuring stations are brought onto the part by manual pivoting arms.
